Welcome Back to Cottonwood

A letter from Roy Guisinger, Chair

Welcome to the newly reformed Cottonwood Group! A small group of dedicated individuals has been working for several months revitalizing the Group, and their efforts are finally paying off. Since late November 2003, I have had the pleasure of working with this team in creating a strategy that will activate the Cottonwood Group once again.

In February, we nominated a group of interim officers, who will retain their positions until the fall of 2004 when we will hold a formal Cottonwood-membership wide election. [Webmaster's Note: The elections were held as scheduled, and the results are shown in the ExCom listing.] Additionally, we have been working on finding a new issue focus, while not abandoning the old CAFO focus. Despite the absence of a group structure, Sierra Club members have remained active in the region over these intervening years.

Some of them, along with non-Sierra members, have formed a group called "Citizens for Renewable Energy" in the Hastings area and have been actively supporting wind energy as an alternative to the building of a new coal-fired power plant. Other members have been working with Nebraska Wildlife Federation to preserve the habitat and water flow along the Platte River. And, still others have been working to promote organic- and natural-food products as a way to promote the health of both people and the environment.

Meanwhile, the single most important thing we need is your involvement on the issues that are most meaningful to you. Even though we are all very busy surviving the economic downturn, we must not falter in our dedication to ensure the survival of the natural world, upon which we depend.

We welcome you back to Cottonwood.
