Factory Farms in Nebraska
Thursday, October 25, 2007

This program, which is free and open to the public, will start at 7:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church, 69th & Cass Streets, Omaha. The program is co-sponsored by the Missouri Valley Group of the Sierra Club and the Friends of Heron Haven.

Factory farms are widespread in Nebraska, not only ruining the rural way of life for our small-town neighbors but also affecting all of us, whether we are aware of them or not. As city dwellers, we may not have to keep our windows shut all summer just to keep out the putrid smells of the factory farm in the vicinity, but we are eating the products produced at these factories.

We need to be aware of how this type of production method affects our environment by polluting creeks, rivers, groundwater, and the air. Additionally, we need to know how this type of "farming" affects our long-term health due to the methods of animal care. Factory-farmed animals are given small amounts of antibiotics in their daily feed. As a result, we can find resistance to the antibiotic tetracycline in organisms living in groundwater near large hog factories, and increased amounts of antibiotics and pathogens in the food we consume.

Our October program will feature two committed advocates who are tireless in their work to protect family farmers in Nebraska. Jim Knopik is a farmer who has experienced how the factory farms affect his livelihood, as well as his way of life and that of his neighbors. Jim is also one of the founders of North Star Neighbors, a group of family farmers that produces naturally raised meats.

Laura Krebsbach is a consultant for the GRACE foundation. She assists activist groups in community organizing, specializing in fighting factory farms. Both Laura and Jim are founding members of NEAC, the Nebraska Environmental Action Committee.

Laura and Jim will tell us first-hand about their experiences. WeÕll also see the documentary short, "The True Cost of Food." We'll wrap up our program with learning about sustainable alternatives to factory farms.

For refreshments, we'll feature some local products, including cheese from sustainable Nebraska farms.
