MVG September 2005 Program: Sierra Summit Report

Two local members of the Missouri Valley Group of the Sierra Club went to the Sierra Club Summit and Expo, September 8-11 in San Francisco, and they will present their experiences on Thursday, September 22. Missouri Valley Group Chair Karen Rock, and Vice-Chair Candy Bless (the under-30 delegate for Nebraska) were two of the 3,000 Sierra Club members who gathered to discuss the state of the environment. Rock and Bless will talk about the convention and present some of the Summit highlights.

The overall purpose of the Summit was to set the Club's national priorities for the next five years, which is being done with input from groups and chapters across the nation that took part in an exercise to map out priorities each thought were important for the Club at the national level.

The top three priorities chosen by the Nebraska Chapter were 1) build a new energy future, 2) invest in building sustainable economies and businesses, and 3) promote wise individual and consumer choices. In additon to the direction-setting process, other sessions were available for each delegate to attend on such subjects as:

  • Environmental Expression Through Art - For those who give expression to their connection with nature in creative ways.
  • Living Well - For all of us looking for new ideas on how to integrate sustainable choices into our homes, workplace and daily life.
  • Natural Heritage - For those who are striving to protect the creatures and wild habitats of our Earth, skies, and waters in the current political reality.
  • Outdoor Adventure - For those who live to hike, climb, and spend as much time outdoors as possible.
  • Visionary Solutions - For the visionary within all of us seeking new technologies, possibilities and solutions for an environmentally sound world.
  • Working Smart - For everyone who knows that protecting the environment means working smarter than ever before.
  • Engaging Youth - For the next generation of environmental activists.

Everyone is welcome at the program, which will start with a socal hour at 7:00 p.m., followed by the presentation at 7:30 on September 22, at First United Methodist Church, 69th and Cass streets in Omaha.
