Inside the MVG: Service Opportunities

At-large Delegate to Sierra Summit

You have probably heard about the Sierra Summit, Sierra Club's first ever National Environmental Convention and Expo. It features nationally recognized speakers, workshops, outings, and an Outdoor and Green Expo. in San Francisco September 8-11, 2005.

But a key part of the Summit is a Strategic Direction-Setting Process where over 1,000 delegates from the Groups and Chapters will convene during the Summit to determine the Sierra Club's strategic direction for the next five years. Each Chapter has been allocated delegates based on the number of groups and the chapter membership.

The Nebraska Chapter has been allocated 9 delegates. Those delegates include the Council Delegate, a senior volunteer, an outings leader, and a member under age 30 all selected by the Chapter Executive Committee. Each of our four Groups will select one delegate. Based on our Chapter membership, the Nebraska Chapter will elect one (1) At-large delegate to attend.

The At-Large delegate will be self-nominated and chosen democratically at a meeting open to all chapter members. This meeting will be held on Thursday, May 26, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. at the 1st United Methodist Church, 69th and Cass Streets in Omaha. Members who want to be delegates will have an opportunity to nominate themselves and organize members to come to the meeting and vote for them, if there are more nominees than delegate slots. For more information on the Summit, go online to The Nebraska Chapter will cover cost for delegates up to $500.00. The delegate will be required to pay the $100.00 registration fee.

We Need Your Frequnt Flier Miles

Although the Sierra Summit is a club-wide event, the Nebraska Chapter is responsible for covering the cost of airfare and lodging for our delegates to the Summit. If anyone has extra frequent flyer miles they would like to donate to the Chapter, those miles would help to ease the burden on our Chapter budget to cover the cost of the airfare to San Francisco. If you have frequent flyer miles you would like to donate for this cause please contact Glen Murray at (308) 381-1397 (Home) or (308) 384-0200 (Office).
